Every pearl in our collection starts when tiny mantle tissue is inserted into a freshwater mussel, followed by years of slow underwater growth. At harvest time, mussels deliver raw pearls far from finished jewelry. It is much like a natural lottery, and our daily work is to pick out the most exceptional gems from the batch.
Most customers never witness the journey from harvest to jewelry box. Today we take you inside our sorting room: how our team hand selects pearls, and why truly fine pearls remain remarkably rare.
Once harvested, pearls are washed and dried. Graded sieves first separate pearls by size. Optical sorters carry out an initial screening, grouping pearls by shape and flagging obvious surface blemishes. This automated phase handles large volumes efficiently.
Yet machines can only go so far. Final quality assessment still depends entirely on human expertise.
Our skilled graders examine every pearl under daylight balanced lamps, using tweezers to rotate each piece slowly. They evaluate pearls against five core standards:
1. Luster — The Mirror Test Luster is the most critical quality factor. We check how clearly light reflects off pearl surfaces. Top grade pearls act like tiny mirrors with sharp, crisp reflections. No matter how round a pearl appears, dull or chalky luster disqualifies it from premium grades.
2. Surface Quality — The Honesty Test Under close observation, nearly all cultured pearls carry minor natural traces: tiny pits, faint ridges or subtle spots. Graders count visible blemishes and calculate the percentage of clean surface area. For our finest grade, a pearl needs at least 95% clean surface.
3. Shape — The Roundness Test Freshwater pearls grow around soft mantle tissue rather than solid bead nuclei, so perfectly spherical specimens are uncommon. Most harvest yields semi baroque and baroque shapes. Truly round freshwater pearls represent one of nature’s rarest outcomes.
4. Size — The Millimeter Test Larger pearls are scarcer. A single mussel may nurture dozens of pearls at one time, spreading its natural energy thin. Size alone cannot make a pearl valuable, yet when paired with great luster, clean surface and ideal shape, larger pearls gain significantly higher worth.
5. Color & Overtone — The Harmony Test Beyond base body colors including white, pink, lavender and soft gold, graders assess subtle overtones that create inner glow. The most challenging task is strand matching. Graders arrange pearls piece by piece like solving a puzzle, balancing tone, luster, shape and size for near perfect visual harmony.
After grading, top tier pearls pass to senior craftsmen for a second round of final inspection, reviewed by personnel with decades long industry experience.
Statistics illustrate just how selective this process is:
· Only 3 10% of harvested freshwater pearls are genuinely round; many industry references place this figure below 3%.
· Among round pearls, only a small portion meet strict surface standards for top grades.
· The absolute highest tier — round shape, ≥95% clean surface and mirror bright luster — accounts for roughly 1% of total harvest, and some sources quote as low as 0.3%.
In short, out of one hundred harvested pearls, merely one or two will qualify for XUELUO fine jewelry.
Pearls physically record every condition during their multi year growth. Shifts in water temperature, water quality fluctuations, seasonal stress or mussel health issues will all leave permanent marks on nacre layers. A pearl cannot hide its growing environment; it preserves it.
Since every mussel, tissue graft and growing season differs, no two pearls are exactly identical. Perfection cannot be manufactured — it can only be discovered in nature.
Machines can sort pearls by size within seconds. Still, no algorithm can distinguish between plain brightness and deep, luminous luster. Our senior graders spot subtle shade differences between pink and peach without reference charts. They tell whether one pearl will complement skin tones while another will appear flat and lifeless.
Our sorting workspace stays quiet, focused and deliberate. Thousands of pearls flow through our workers’ hands each season, yet only a small number pass every quality checkpoint.
When you choose XUELUO pearl jewelry, you gain more than a decorative accessory. You receive the result of countless working hours, and a rare natural outcome that occurs roughly once in every hundred harvested pearls.
Every XUELUO pearl has gone through sieving, machine screening, lamp light inspection, five manual evaluation criteria and senior level final checks. This is the real story behind its glowing surface.
